About This Program

The Jazz Studies degree program is critically important to the academic life of the University, and was pioneered by Department of Music Chairman, Lindsey B. Sarjeant, whose pedagogy has inspired colleges and universities worldwide. This program provides students an opportunity to interact with and learn from the greats.

Each semester concerts are performed by the FAMU Jazz Ensemble in Lee Hall Auditorium on the FAMU campus, where some of the most celebrated names in jazz have performed. Featured artists have included Florida A&M University's own Cannonball and Nat Adderley, The Ramsey Lewis Trio, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis, The Marcus Roberts Trio, The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra under the Direction of FAMU Alumnus Scotty Barnhart, The United States Air Force Airmen of Note, The United States Army Jazz Ambassadors directed by FAMU Alumnus CWO3 Alexander Davis, to name a few, and the guest artist concert series continues to offer our students opportunities to learn and grow with masterclasses held by great guest artists.
