    OUR MISSION

The Center for Deliberative Democracy, Civic Engagement, and Census Information is located in the Department of History and Political Science at Florida A&M University. The CDCC conducts research about democracy, public opinion of voters, and public policy. The Center actively engages with the general public through civic educational workshops, voting drives, and public deliberations. Additionally, the center has been a part of U.S. Census Bureau’s Data Dissemination Network or the now Census Information Center since August 2000. Since partnering with the Census Information Center, the CDCC has assisted with the planning and data collection of underrepresented communities in the Leon County, Florida area.

    PEOPLE

Conducting Research on Democracy, Public Opinion, and Public Policy

The center examines how people perceive democratic processes, what voters prioritize, and the impact of public policies on communities. This research enables scholars, policymakers, and the public to gain a deeper understanding of political attitudes and decision-making processes.

Civic Engagement and Public Educational Outreach

The center actively teaches people about civic responsibilities—such as voting, participating in community-focused discussions, and understanding government processes. This strengthens local democratic participation.

    Facilitating Public Deliberations

The center creates structured opportunities where people can discuss political or social issues in a respectful and informed manner. The goal is not to argue but to weigh trade-offs and find common ground.

Partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau’s Data Dissemination Network / Census Information Center

The center helps communities understand census data and ensures underrepresented groups are accurately counted. This is important because census numbers determine funding, political representation, and community planning.
