Concert Choir Vienna City Hall

With a diverse repertoire of classical, jazz, contemporary, spiritual, gospel, and multicultural choral genres, the FAMU Concert Choir is well known for its innovation and versatility. Students in the Concert Choir represent some of the best talents on the campus of FAMU.

Under the direction of Dr. Mark Butler, the Florida A&M University Concert Choir is recognized as one of the premier collegiate choral ensembles in America.

  • In September 2021, in collaboration with vocal artist Alicia Keys, the FAMU Concert Choir made history in the United States by being selected to be the first ever to sing the Black National Anthem – "Lift Every Voice and Sing" at an NFL game.

  • In late 2019, The FAMU Concert Choir was invited to perform at the prestigious world-renowned Carnegie Hall in New York City. (Unfortunately, the event was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic).
  • Command performance at FMEA conference (January 2022)
  • Featured performing guest in USA Today’s documentary “Seven Days of 1961” (November 2021)
  • Repertoire includes classical, acappella spirituals, contemporary, gospel, jazz, and multicultural pieces.
  • Regularly prepares for Fall, Holiday, and Spring Concerts, along with tours and special performances.
  • Most recently, on November 29, 2023, the FAMU Concert Choir traveled to Europe, giving command performances at the City Hall of Vienna, Austria, and at the famous Melk Abby Cathedral Church in Melk Abby, Austria.
  • In March of 2023, the FAMU Concert Choir, along with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, gave a premier performance of “Walk in Dignity”, which was commissioned by renowned American composer Joel Thompson
  • In January 2023, the Concert Choir performed another major work – 40 pages of music, titled “Weather” by composer Rollo Dilworth.
  • Past Achievements:
  • October 2022: Command performance at Florida ACDA Conference.
  • January 2022: Command performance at FMEA conference.
  • Fall 2021: 1st place at Florida HBCU "Battle of Voices"; featured in USA TODAY documentary.
  • FAMU's vocal and choral students have also performed significant cast roles in Musicals and Opera Productions.
  • The FAMU Concert Choir has made several collaborative performances with celebrity artists. Some include: Songstress, Callie Day, Gospel artist, Tye Tribbett, Vocalist, Alicia Keys, The legendary group Female Folk Singers, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Classical Vocalist, NaGuanda Nobles, and Broadway Singer, Sal Viviano.
  • Selected by a panel of judges as 1st first winners of the Florida HBCU Choirs and selected as the crowd’s favorite (October 2021)

Events

The Florida A&M University Concert Choir

The FAMU Concert Choir usually takes two tours per year.  One occurs during Spring Break, the other occurs at the end of the school year.

The Choir has 2 major concert events during the year. A Fall Concert, and the Spring Colours Concert.
