Inspired by her African grandfather, 17-year old Mariah combats the pressures of family, societal expectations, and the harsh realities of racial and gender stereotyping as she dreams of pursuing a college education in 1898. Discover a story of resilience and hope in this inspiring tribute to one young woman’s uphill battle to break free from the constraints of a world that seeks to hold her back.
As we celebrate the work of this writer, we invite you to visit “Black Masks: Four Decades of Black Arts Excellence.” This special exhibition honors the founder/editor Beth Turner and showcases her contributions to Black theatre.
