FAMU ESSENTIAL THEATRE is excited to announce that we were the sole recipient of THE GOLDEN COLLECTION in the State of Florida.

  • On this list of historical libraries and community centers, seven recipients were Universities, and of those seven, three were HBCU’s (Florida A&M University, Howard University, and Benedict College). THE GOLDEN COLLECTION is a collection of 15 plays written by black writers.
  • The team behind the Broadway play Slave Play has donated Collections, totaling 800 scripts, to public libraries and community Centers in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, & Guam.
  • FAMU ESSENTIAL THEATRE, among other libraries and community centers nationwide, recently received an edition of THE GOLDEN COLLECTION, a donation of 15 plays by Prominent black playwrights, including the recent Broadway play Slave Play by Jeremy O. Harris.

  • Many of the recipient libraries and community centers spotlight historical sites of racial progress, sites of continued racial violence and inequity, and serve predominantly Black communities.

  • Ultimately, the collection was donated to libraries that were passionate about bringing these plays into their communities. The donated scripts were purchased from Sister’s Uptown Bookstore, a Black-owned bookstore and community resource center in Manhattan.
